I’m home sick this week. As much as I hate being

I’m home sick this week. As much as I hate being sick and I’m frustrated by the disruption to my schedule, I think there are hidden blessings to be found in sickness.

Since I returned from Christmas break, I’ve been feeling the pressure of my calendar. I’m a homeschooler, private teacher/tutor, robotics coach, and a writer (on top of being a wife, mother, and active member of my church). I love all these parts of my life, but it’s a lot to juggle. This week, I’ve had to cancel everything on my calendar and just rest. And guess what? The world kept right on moving. My week of rest has not been as catastrophic as one might imagine given the amount of stress I’d been carrying.

Sickness reminds us to sit still. Sickness reminds us that it’s okay to set everything aside for a little while. Sickness says slow down. Make a little space. Your to-do list will keep for another day. And isn’t that reminder a blessing? Sometimes it’s needed.

And so I sit and rest, my feet snuggly tucked into my new foot rub contraption. I’m not yet feeling better, but I will in time…when my body has had enough rest to heal.

We were snowed in today. Normally, on Fridays, I work in local coffee shops or at our local library. I get so much done when I’m away from home. There’s noise, but it’s not a distracting noise. It’s not noise relevant to me. At home, I have such a hard time finding my focus. I can hear the TV or my son playing toys. There are constant knocks on the office door. It makes me wonder how anyone eats or makes decisions when I’m gone. 😆

I finally found my groove today. I turned up my Pandora 90’s station and got to work. I suppose sometimes you just need a little noise to drown out the noise. 🎵🎶

I love my family. I love my office. I love to write. Sometimes those things just line up in opposition to one another.

When tragedy happens, it’s easy to be overwhelme

When tragedy happens, it’s easy to be overwhelmed even from afar. We want to turn on the news and plop down on the couch and drown in the intimate horror that others are facing.

The fires in CA are terrible. I know what it is to lose everything. Those families will take years to recover, and deep down, they’ll carry the loss forever. That kind of hurt has a way of taking root.

But for those of us watching from afar…our overwhelm, our sadness, probably hurts us more than it helps them. Turn that heartache over to God. Pray for those in harm’s way. Pray for their peace and resiliency. Do what you can in the moment now. Turn off the news, get off the couch, say a prayer, and nourish the ones God has put into your care. There will be time for action when the worst is over.

(When it’s time to act, I recommend supporting LCMS Disaster Response. Their LERT program- Lutheran Early Response Teams - were very useful in my local community after tornadoes last spring. They’ll be in CA to clean up and rebuild as soon as it’s safe to do so.)
