He gives and takes away. Years ago, I sat in church, having just suffered my first miscarriage. I couldn’t sing this song. It hurt too much. I wanted to sing, but I couldn’t speak the words through my tears.

He gives and takes away. A few years after that, I sat in church again. I was sick. Too weak to stand and sing. We had just found toxic mold in our home. We knew that we were likely to lose all of our belongings. I couldn’t sing this song. My fear was big. I wanted to sing, but I couldn’t speak the words through my tears.

He gives and takes away. We sang this song today at church. It comes around every eight weeks or so. I can sing it now. Almost. I still can’t sing, “You give and take away.” My throat closes up. Other than that, I sing through the tears. Every. Time.

Sometimes a song is more than a song. Sometimes it’s a memory. A wound. Sometimes it’s a record of healing. A litany of blessings upon blessings.

Even at my best, I don’t choose to say, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.” There’s no way I could say this on my own. My throat would be stuck at “You give and take away.” God speaks these words into my heart so that I can say them…sing them…be thankful for them. He speaks healing into your heart as well.

If your road is marked with suffering…if the darkness is closing in…know that even then, God is working FOR you. His blessings are FOR you. In the giving. And in the taking away. You are loved.

God, the Author and Creator of all, can heal your heart so that (one day) you too can speak, “Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
